Will, Desire, and Belief: Andrew D. Chumbley and the Sabbatic Craft with Fr. Aristaeus Phosphoros

In his essay “Cultus Sabbati: Provenance, Dream, and Magistry” Andrew D. Chumbley wrote, “The Sabbatic Craft is a name for a Nameless Faith. It is a term used to describe an ongoing tradition of sorcerous wisdom, an initiatory path proceeding from both immediate vision and historical succession.” Chumbley was an enigmatic and deeply talented English author, artist, scholar, and magician. Despite his untimely death at the age of 37, he left behind an astonishing depth and variety of writings on the subjects of witchcraft, sorcery, and magick ranging from academic essays to some of the most challenging and potent grimoires written in the modern era, describing his system of Crooked Path Sorcery. Chumbley also served as the first Magister of the magical society Cultus Sabbati, a closed circle of initiates practicing a heady mixture of various strains of traditional witchcraft, high ritual magick, dream work, and Luciferian gnosis centered around the ideas and symbols of the Witches’ Sabbath. In this presentation, we will take a look at the public history and outer works of Andrew D. Chumbley and the Cultus Sabbati, as well as the impact they have had on today’s magickal culture and landscape.
