The Minerval Degree
The Minerval is the first initiatory step into Ordo Templi Orientis. The name derives from Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, and a Minerval might be understood simply as a seeker of wisdom, truth, or light.
Designated 0°, the Minerval holds a unique position: an “honored guest” of the Order rather than a full member. This is by design. The degree exists so that both the candidate and the Order can evaluate whether the relationship is the right fit. The Minerval gets to experience our initiatory system and community firsthand; existing members get to know the candidate before sponsoring them for full membership in the First Degree.
In the symbolic language of the Man of Earth degrees, the Minerval represents a soul contemplating incarnation—attracted to this life but not yet committed, present but not yet bound. It is a liminal space, a threshold, a place of watching and choosing.
There is no pressure to advance. It is equally honorable to remain a Minerval for one’s entire life as it is to pursue the higher degrees. The choice, as with all things in Thelema, belongs to the individual.

To all who joined us for our public celebration of the Gnostic Mass on January 3rd: thank you.
After nearly two years without a public Mass, we weren’t sure what to expect. The turnout surpassed our greatest hopes. The Mass team was deeply moved to see so many faces—familiar and new—gathered to share in this central rite of our tradition.
The Gnostic Mass is the heart of our public worship, and there is something irreplaceable about celebrating it with a full house. Your presence made the evening what it was.
This will not be our last public performance. We are planning future Masses both at Nocturna and at other venues around Austin. If you’d like to join us again—or if you missed this one and want to experience the Mass for yourself—keep an eye on this newsletter for announcements.
