From the Lodge Master – September 2022

Dear All,

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

Being a student of astrology expands my awareness of how the planets noticeably influence the dynamics here on earth. It has been surprising to me, just how important the role of the planets are in astrology. When I observe the celestial universe through the lens of astrology long enough, I notice patterns in how the archetypal energy of the planets expresses itself. Many years ago, I loved to practice planetary magick. It taught me to think more deeply about associations related to a particular planet, including day, time, deities, minerals and more. But then, I did not study astrology as I do now. With my beginner studies underway in the systems of astrology, it is time for me to dive much deeper into the planetary archetypes from my new perspective.

Planetary magick is the practice of working alongside the planetary energies and their frequencies through ritual, remediation, myth, invocation, talismans, correspondences, hymns, and connection. Now it may have been that Hermes Trismegistus was the first recorded to suggest that as above so below, though consider this excerpt below which draws a line from the role of the planets to our own human experience.

“Seven wandering stars are there which move in spheres before Olympus’ gate….To these stars the human race is committed: we have within us Mene, Zeus, Ares, Paphie, Kronos, Helios, Hermes. By this means are we destined to draw from the living aether of the Kosmos our tears, mirth, anger, our parenthood, our converse, our sleep and every desire.”
Hermes Trismegistus Excerpt 29, from the book Isis to Horus

The planetary archetypes are deep within our psyche creating a constellation of functions corresponding to the planetary powers. We know that astrology assumes an influence in our lives, though how many have considered the magical implications of this internal and external influence?

Aleister Crowley states in Magick in Theory and Practice, “each element of oneself is….sterile and without meaning, until it fulfills itself, by “love under will,’ in its counterpart in the Macrocosm.”

The law of Thelema is a method to get to know, understand, attune with, and to direct, with love, within our psyche as well as externally, the influences of the wandering stars. This means planetary magick is both a journey and a homecoming. When we develop conscious relationships with the planets, we can begin to co-create our reality with the help of their influence. The purpose of developing a relationship with them is the very nature of magick; to gain their favor to enact your Will.

My books of reference for planetary magick include 777, The Sword and the Serpent, and the Rites of Eleusis. Starting September 10th, this month, at the hour of mercury, in the sign of Virgo, I plan to create a full moon planetary working in person. I hope you will join me!

Love is the law, love under will.
